Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. While DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was in her the college. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house of one of jury. In the course of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. The year 1999 was the time she established her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
